An extensive network of transportation in Mumbai has made getting around the city really easy and hassle-free. Mumbaikars are dependent on local transport to reach their work places, which are mostly far off from the downtown.
Taxis are an intrinsic part of the life of any Mumbaikar. Tourists can also avail these taxis to move around the city. You will get innumerable number of taxis plying across the city. Traveling in taxis is really cheap. You can get into any of the common taxis-ranging from the Fiat Unos to the Tata Indicas.
Other types of taxis are the cool cabs which have a distinct blue or silver color, consisting of electronic meters. These taxis come with a higher charge, almost 40% more than the ordinary taxis.
The Yellow and Black Taxis are not equipped with an air-conditioning system, but have become commonplace in Mumbai. If you have extra luggage to carry with you, you can hire a top carrier, which comes with sufficient space with the capacity of three large suitcases.
If you are visiting Mumbai for the first time and are not aware of the standard rates of regular taxis, you must follow a few tips. You can take a prepaid taxi at the railway station or airport. Otherwise, you must go by the rate on the meter. You must be careful that the meter reads from the beginning of your journey.
Apart from taxis, you can avail auto-rickshaws to travel around the city and its suburbs. Adding effectiveness to the transportation in Mumbai, auto-rickshaws are the only mode of transport to run services even beyond Bandra to the west and Sion in the central neighborhood. They, however, do not operate in the downtown areas.
Before your journey begins, make sure that the meter shows the flag-down reading as 1.00. The number should not be higher at the start. The minimum auto fare is fixed at Rs. 9. The fare is approximately Rs. 5 for every km. The meter card can prove handy at times. Auto-rickshaws do not travel for long distances.
An excellent network of bus services has enhanced the transportation facilities and services in Mumbai. Amongst the major bus companies, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport boasts of elaborate services to all corners of the city and its neighborhood. These buses also ply to the suburbs including Navi Mumbai, Thane, and the Mira-Bhayanadar region. Seats are most of the time vied for. The uniformed conductor will hand your ticket to you. There are special seats marked for ladies, senior citizens, pregnant women, infants and the handicapped.
Buses operate from early as 5 AM to as late as midnight. Fares come really cheap and you can avail this mode of transport during peak hours, to avoid the rush in local trains.
Local trains have gained importance over the years now. The locals mostly use the Suburban Rail Network which is known as the Locals. The Western Line, the Central Main Line, and the Harbour Line have added to the comprehensive transport facilities.
