Each product that moves by an LTL carrier has a freight class assigned. A single governing body know as the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) determines a product’s freight class. All carriers acknowledge the product’s classification that is assigned by this group, it is virtually the unspoken gospel. The NMFTA will analyze a product’s typical size, value, density and difficulty of transporting that particular type of product. Once they have analyzed the product, they will assign that product a freight class. The freight class will range from 50 to 500. The lower the freight class, the cheaper the cost will be to move the item. Typically items at lower classes will be items that are very dense, easy to transport and will typically have a low per pound value. The higher the freight class, the cost to move the item will be more expensive. Items listed at higher classes will be more bulky, difficult to transport with lower weights and are more valuable.

It is very important that the correct class information be entered into the quoting system to allow customers to receive accurate quotes. A carrier has the right to inspect any item being shipped on their trucks. If a product’s description does not match the class that is shown on the Bill Of Lading. the carrier does have the right to adjust the billing and bill the shipment at a higher freight class. If a carrier adjusts the class and bills the shipper at a higher rate, those additional charges will be passed along to the shipper. Some carriers will also bill additional inspection fees to the shipment, which will also be passed along to the customer as a supplemental bill. Typically a rating system will provide accurate pricing based on the information entered. If the shipment’s class is different than the class that is entered, the amount billed to the shipper will not match the amount they were quoted and can cause issues in collecting the freight charges.

The following are Product examples and their Freight Class:

  • 500 lbs. of bricks- Class 50
  • 500 lbs. of computer towers- Class 100
  • 500 lbs. of Ping-Pong Balls- Class 500

Again, as you can see, the heavier the product the lower the Class rating and thus the shipper will pay a less rate. Freight shipping is not a glamorous industry, but it is a very necessary part of the worlds supply chain, and if utilized the right way a company can save a lot of money.

How To Build Your Own Mystery Machine Van From The Scooby-Doo TV Show

The most iconic van on TV has to be: „The Mystery Machine,“ whose job it was to transport  Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, and Fred (AKA Mystery, Inc.) to all of the spooky places that their unsolved mysteries lead them. (and rescue them all afterwards too!)  The Mystery Machine has been reproduced in every form a childish mind could imagine, from toys, to clothes & accessories, to decorations, some of which are still sought by collectors.

Here’s one Scooby-Doo Mystery solved for you:  The Mystery Machine was based on a 1968 Chevrolet Sport van 108.  It went on to be awarded the „top fictional vehicle of all time“ in a 2006 Toys R Us survey.  A different version of this van was featured in the live-action movie about Scooby-Doo and his mystery-solving, teen trouble finders.  Yet, most Scooby fans seem to prefer to replicate the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of The Mystery Machine.

„The Mystery Machine“ On Screen History:

-The cartoon version of the Mystery Van has too many credits to list, many TV shows, movies, DVD’s, but a real Mystery van appeared in two live action movies about Scooby-Doo and the gang: „Scooby Doo“ 2002 and „Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed“ 2004.

Velma, Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Daphne, and Fred (AKA Mystery, Inc.) 

Even though some real live versions of The Mystery Machine were not actually featured in any live-action Scooby-Doo movies, they still attract lots of fans & photos.  The most famous one is on display at Universal Studios Hollywood, and deserves some love in this article. Too many vans are sentenced to „death row“ (waiting for the crusher) each year. The Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine has also been sighted in Kirkland, Washington.  The van is actually a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) vehicle working to efficiently measure roadway stripes.  The Mystery Van look-a-like vehicle does not chaufeur Scooby-Doo and Shaggy around.  It has a more serious job, using a laser attached to the van to measure the brightness of stripes as it drives along the highway.

I remember when I first started sales, and in particularly, when I received my first bonus check. I mean to tell you that I was in hog heaven. I was receiving bonus checks on a monthly basis based on my customers past shipments- there's nothing like residual income. I was walking on the clouds for quite awhile. Then one day it happened, I can still remember where I was when I got the news, my first customer complaint due to damages. I mean he really laid into me, yelling words that I had never thought somebody would say to a stranger- we had only spoken 2 times on the phone. He went on to say that he wanted to send me the pictures of the damage and to find out the process so that he could file his claim. The product was damaged beyond recognition. I was completely and totally in shock about the whole experience. I had to schedule a time to chat with my manager to try to understand what had just happened. We were able to take care of the customer's claim and he continued shipping with us to my surprise. My manager's words still rang clear to this very day- "Get use to it, it happens a lot in this business!"

Fast forward 15 years and to be honest I do not think "damages" are ever something that you get used to, but definitely is a part of the FREIGHT business. Most customers would rather take a trip to the dentist rather than having to file a damage claim. I mean look at the consequences of damage claims.

1) The Consignee (person receiving goods) has to accept product that they were hoping to sell for a profit, or use to gain a profit, now have to sign it off as defective. That's like a kid at Xmas cheerfully unwrapping their present only to discover that pieces of it had been damaged.

2) The Shipper now has to resend the product to their customer before the customer decides to go elsewhere to buy a new product.

3) The shipper loses inventory, and if they are building to order they now have to EXPEDITE materials from their manufacturers, costing them much more money.

4) In the meantime, the Consignee has to hold onto the damaged freight until the damage claim is filed. So everyday (up to 30-45 days) they go in their warehouse they are looking at the damage piece that reminds them of loss profit and frustrations of receiving damage goods. Talk about "damage" control- no pun intended. No one is happy with claims!

This article is geared towards providing some basic information for shippers who might have experienced damage and would like general guidelines to help them better understand what's going on.

LIMIT OF CARRIERS LIABILITY:

All Carriers have a limit of liability. Limit of liability is the Carriers cap as to what they will pay per pound for a loss or damage. Most carriers' limit of liability is based upon the class of the freight. Example; class 50 at $ 2.00 / lb for some carriers it could be ($ 1.00 / lb for others) and class 300 ($ 25.00 per lb.) This is the Carrier's cap regardless of the value of goods. Carriers liability for anything used or refurbished has a maximum liability of $ .10 / lb. Some Carriers will pay $ .50 / lb. But always remember that as a shipper you have the option of taking extra insurance out either with you own Insurance Company, or through the Carriers.

RELEASED VALUE:

This is the value / lb at which a shipper releases the goods. Normally this references NMFC items where the shipper is required to declare a value because the rate (* class) of a shipment is determined by the released value not to EXCEED (RVNX) of the item. In laymen terms this refers to the fact that if a shipper sends out their product at a Class 50 to get a cheap rate (the lower the class the cheaper the rate), but they need a high release value ($ 10,000) then they must raise their Class to coincide with their Released Value (RVNX). In freight claims a shipper "can not have their cake and eat it to …" In other words you can not show a lower class on your bill of lading, then use a high released value in case a damage does occur

FAK TARRIFF PROVISIONS:

This is where the limit of liability is based upon class, it is based upon the class at which the shipment is billed, NOT ACTUAL CLASS, so when a customer ships a class 100 and enjoys an FAK class 50 the limit of liability is based upon class 50 NOT actual class. The Carrier will not pay on ACTUAL class but will limit the liability at the class 50.

CONCEALED DAMAGE CLAIMS:

Concealed damage must be reported to the carrier within 15 days of delivery this varies depending on the Carrier. Carriers generally decline concealed damage claims or settle for 1/3 of the claimed amount. You must be able to prove Carrier neglect so additional information may be required when filing a concealed damage claim. Pictures, a complete description of the damage, packing list, how the freight was packaged and any additional information that would prove Carrier neglect. Freight charges are not recoverable on concealed damage claims. Another very important tip here is when you as a shipper sends freight to your customer and damage does occur in transit, it is very important that your customer notate this on the carrier Bill of Lading. Also remember the driver does not have to wait for inspection of the freight. The consignee must check the outside of crates, packages, pallet etc for dents and signs of mishandling.

In conclusion, damages are a part of shipping freight. There's really no way around it. However the best defense is a good offense. Make sure to make the necessary steps in packaging your product to the utmost. If need be consult with a packaging engineer, to ensure the product is braced and secured each time it is shipped. Lastly, understand what your liability is for your products and convey that information to your customer to keep them informed and knowledgeable in the event of damage.

Northwest Airlines was selected for the following reasons. First, the price was the most economical, $222.62 per passenger. Second, the travel times were very convenient for us, depart at 9:19 a.m. flight 954. Return flight #955 departing at 12:30 p.m. Third, the special perks we discovered with Northwest. Be sure to sign up with Northwest Worldperks. A traveler earns points that can be traded for tickets with each flight. The traveler can also earn miles through different programs and promotions at this sight. Two other sites where Northwest miles can be earned in a easy manner are e-miles and e-rewards. We use both of these sites.

A major concern at any airport is parking. This was handled through Priceline.com. Fast Track in Memphis was selected at a cost of $37.92 for four days of parking. Both times we have used this service it has been quick and painless. The Fast Track drivers make this often unpleasant experience an unexpected pleasure.

As we were going to end our trip by driving, a rental car was a must. We used the Priceline.com „name your own price“ to get a better deal on a rental car. A condition on using this feature of Priceline is that once accepted the deal is final. We rented a mid size car from Avis for $86.24 total for three days. Avis is very handy and located at the airport which cut out transportation time to our car. The employees were very friendly and made sure we were in our car very quickly, which was appreciated. We have also used Hertz at the Orlando airport and were very pleased with them. If you use Hertz there will be a fifteen minute bus ride to the Hertz lot.

Using these easy steps any traveler should have a seamless trip to the wonderful city of Orlando and the surrounding area. Enjoy Disney and the other family destinations.
